From the very beginning of Keopu Coffee, we have been completely dedicated to organic coffee farming and production. We don't spray any herbicides or non-organic pesticides on our coffee, and we only use 100% organic and sustainably produced fertilizers. Most Kona coffee farms spray Round-up on their fields rather than the labor intensive process of weed-wacking the grass around the trees and allowing a cover crop throughout the field. We use feather and bone meal fertilizers, natural minerals, along with compost made on-site instead of the synthetic petroleum based products that are the norm on most farms. Our yeilds our lower and our trees grow slower, but we are doing what is right or "pono" for the land that our children play in and our drinking water percolates through.
From 2008 to 2012 our farm was USDA Organic certified, but after a more than 100% increase in the cost of organic certification in 2013 combined with a cut in government funding for organic farmers in Hawaii, we were forced to relinquish our USDA organic certification. Regardless, the Keopu Coffee farm we will always be committed to organic, sustainable production of Kona Coffee.
